News | ‘Copy’ of the Magna Carta has been confirmed to be an original document by our researchers here at UEA and King’s College London 🏛️📜
Researchers have discovered that a Magna Carta owned by Harvard Law School is an extraordinarily rare original from 1300, and not the ‘copy’ it was believed to be since Harvard purchased it from London dealer, Sweet & Maxwell, in 1946.
Professor Nicholas Vincent (UEA Research) and Professor David Carpenter (King’s College London), verified that the “somewhat rubbed and damp-stained” document is one of six known to survive intact from 1300 during the reign of King Edward I.

Professor Vincent said:
“The document is a totem of liberty, central to our sense of who we are: a freedom-loving, free-born people.
“It is an icon of both the Western political tradition and of constitutional law. If you asked anybody what the most famous single document in the history of the world is, they would probably name Magna Carta.”
