Doomsayers say PM Modi’s will sweep the 2024 Election, But India is a diverse federal state. Look at West Bengal

The politics of West Bengal are currently dominated by the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), led by Chief Minister Mamata BanerjeeThe AITC has been in power since the 2011 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election1.

In the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, the AITC won re-election by a large margin, securing a majority of the seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the official opposition, winning 77 seats, despite expectations of a closer contest2.

Other political parties such as the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Indian National Congress have historically been influential in the state’s politics. However, in the 2021 election, the Indian National Congress did not win any seats, and the leftist parties collectively won just one seat as part of the Sanjukta Morcha alliance2.

The Sanjukta Morcha was an alliance formed between the Congress, Left Front, and the Indian Secular Front (ISF), which announced their collaboration from a Brigade Rally on 28 February 20212. Despite their efforts, the alliance only managed to secure one seat in the assembly.
